A Good Match Between Concrete And Sariya – What Makes A Structure Strong

TMT or Thermo-Mechanically Treated steel bars are the gold standard for high-
quality construction. Manufacturers such as Moira Sariya use the latest German
CRS technology to manufacture its TMT bars. The technology which involves
subjecting billets to high temperatures of upto 1100 degree Celsius and then rolling
and cooling them in a two-step process (by quenching them with high-pressure
water sprays and ambient cooling) creates steel bars with a hard outer surface and a
softer inner core.

The resulting TMT bar is well regarded the world over for the many advantages it
brings to the construction process – strength, ductility, corrosion and fire resistance,
and affordability. In this article, we will talk about another advantage – enhanced
bonding with concrete.

What Are The Cross Ribbed Patterns On TMT Bars?
To ensure the concrete can grip the steel rods perfectly, most TMT bars come with a
pattern. At Moira Sariya, the TMT bars have a distinct cross-rib (x-rib) pattern, which is made using an automated CNC notch-cutting machine. This allows concrete to bond uniformly with the TMT bars and provides enhanced strength and stability to the entire structure.
Before the cross-ribbed design was introduced in the steel industry, smooth steel
rods offered minimal grip to the concrete – this made the structure prone to collapse
or cracking.

How Does The TMT Cross Ribbed Pattern Help?

Enhanced stability
Concrete and steel must work well together to provide the right kind of stability to
the RCC structure – for this, the ribbed pattern on a TMT bar is critical. It gives a tight grip to the concrete when it is overlaid on the steel rods. With something to cling on to, concrete doesn’t slip, and this ensures that the concrete structure retains its strength in the long run. This is especially vital for taller and long-span constructions or RCC structures in earthquake-prone or underwater environments.

Long-lasting bonding due to corrosion resistance properties
The concrete – steel connection can suffer when steel corrodes. Corrosion lessens
the friction provided by the ribbed pattern as it flattens due to rust and concrete
overlay loses its grip on the steel rods. TMT bars, which have anti-corrosion
properties, removes this possibility altogether.
TMT bars come with strength enhancing patterns, but that in itself is not enough.
While sourcing TMT bars, one must also consider other variables such as the spacing between the ribs, height of ribs, angle at which they are slanted and so on. For this,
it is critical to choose a manufacturer with a long-standing reputation and a proven
track record for excellence in the business.
